Shaping the Sides

When the bottom is as big as needed, start the sides. Here is the flat side of the coil seen from what will be the basket's bottom. The other side will look different. If the basket is going to be shaped like a plate, and the bottom will be visible from the top, this side will go toward the inside.

To start up the sides, take the ends of the needles and instead of placing them around the outside of the coil, place them parallel to the underlying coil. Angle the sewing needle as illustrated to sew the coil to the side of the underlying coil.

The shape of the basket is determined by the angle at which the needle is put through the coil. The new coil will be pulled down on top the underlying one.
